Counseling for Men

Are you feeling lost and uncertain about the way your life is going? Do you suffer from chronic anxiety or depression? Do you wish you had someone to talk to but are afraid to ask for help because it isn’t “the manly thing to do?” It may be time to consider therapy. I do specialize in Counseling for Men with the same set of questions to grapple with, and now half of my practice has been men seeking a confidential place to get through what they are going through.

While traditionally men have not been the ones to seek out therapy, that doesn’t mean they haven’t had reason to. For example, according to a recent Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) survey report, the male population seeking to Treatment for Mental Health Issues is lower than that of women with such mental health issues of concern. This is the gap that often arises when men are forced to bear their burdens in silence to preserve an image of strength.

Why is this?

Men grow up with the strict values of masculinity- that is, to be strong and to control their emotions under all circumstances, from a young age. This usually makes a lot of men feel lonely, nervous, and extremely depressed. Even the feelings they are supposed to be seeking assistance with, they stuff and go it alone. It appears to be more appropriate that they bear the burden of their emotional suffering than the stigma of visiting the therapy office. In fact, using professional Mental Health Counselling Services is a tool for gaining a competitive edge in your personal and professional life by improving your emotional resilience.

What do you consider to be some of the most prevalent mental health problems that afflict men?
  • Substance abuse – Men are far more likely to abuse alcohol and drugs.
  • Economic factors – Unemployment or financial problems; many men sadly tie their worth or value into  their financial strength.
  • Bullying – Many young men are the victims of bullying.
  • Relationship issues – Believe it or not, studies have shown that men rely more on their partners for emotional support than women do. This can make relationship problems particularly hard to deal with.
  • Challenges related to fatherhood – While it can be a great source of joy, fatherhood can also cause stress and anxiety, particularly for new fathers.

It cannot be denied that mental health problems do not manifest themselves in the same way as in women, which leads to many symptoms being completely overlooked and not treated. Men often downplay or are unaware of the fact that they are experiencing emotional pain since they have been conditioned to deny it. This causes them to hoard their feelings, which in most cases causes an outburst of a physical complication or sickness, like high blood pressure or heart disease, or worse, they end up killing themselves.
