Couples counseling is for any two people involved in a relationship and experiencing conflict. Sometimes called conjoint, it can be for friends or lovers, living together or separately. The root causes of the conflict are explored, identified and if all are willing, resolved. Sometimes it takes the form of “pre-marital counseling” where role expectations and images of marriage are explored. When marriage enters the picture, our unconscious expectations and images of what a family should be come into play and if role expectations don’t match up it often leads to resentment. We sometimes change in marriage because we are trying to be what we think we should be. Counseling can get to the root of things and save the special love that made you marry in the first place. I am a licensed marriage and family therapist.
